Kathy Mitchell

Seneca, turtle clan- cornhusk, basketry, photography, beadwork

Kathy comes from a family of basket makers dating back to 1850. She learned the traditional way from her grandmother, Nettie Watt, who learned from her father. All materials are prepared in the same fashion as they were over 150 years ago.

Mitchell’s work has been featured at the Seneca Iroquois Museum, and has won numerous awards at various local Art Festivals. In addition to Basketry, she has taught beadwork in the community for over 10 years. An accomplished photographer, Mitchell has both her baskets and photography on display at the Seneca Casino in Salamanca. She does demonstrations at the Seneca Nation Pow Wow and is passing her traditional basket weaving skills onto her grandchildren.
